One of the great things about posting about what you read is that people buy you great books! This was a lovely, thoughtful birthday present from my wonderful sister.
I had really loved Weather and The Department of Speculation by Jenny Offill. Last Things is her first novel — quite different but something I still enjoyed a lot. Like her later work, there is plenty of humour, but I found this much darker and more sad, and the prose not as clear and beautifully spare.
Offill tells the story of the relationship between a mother and young daughter. It swings between magical, joyful highs and lows of pain and isolation. It’s a really powerful account of how scary a world of unexplained adult emotion can be to a child.
